RESUMO

This study presents the case of the post-mortem pink teeth phenomenon observed during an autopsy procedure performed on the body of a man who was kidnapped and murdered approximately 30 days before the examination. The corpse was in an advanced stage of decomposition and putrefaction. Both maxillary and jaw bones were intact, as well as the permanent teeth which presented the "pink teeth phenomenon", probably due to a haemorrhage in the pulp chambers. The pink discolouration was most pronounced at the neck of the teeth. The cause of death was asphyxia. Although the examiners stressed that post-mortem pink teeth must not be considered as a reliable odontological parameter for determining the cause of death, the results of other studies have shown that the pink teeth phenomenon is a common finding related to cases of asphyxia such as strangulation, drowning or suffocation. Thus, the pink teeth phenomenon must be studied in order to determine its role as a post-mortem finding. As of now, an exact relationship between the cause of death and this phenomenon remains unknown.

The aim of this descriptive, observational, quantitatives study was to evaluate the occurrence of vaccination and the use of methods of bio-safety against the hepatitis B virus amongst students of Odontology and Nursing of the University of Pernambuco. It included a sample of 153 students from the eighth and ninth semesters atteending both graduation courses. A survey was taken by a group of consenting participants that answered questions concerning information on the hepatitis B vaccination series and the occurrence of occupational accidents/exposures and the use of individual protective equipment during clinical work. When questioned about the vaccination against hepatitis B, 81.7% answered that they completed the three shot series of vaccinations, but only 8.5% said that they had been tested for soroconversion after completing the vaccination series. The occurrence of accidents with perforating or cutting materials was 28.7%; however, 72.7% of the students didn't accomplish the post incident prophylaxis. The use of protective barriers must be improved among the students, in order to prevent occupational contamination. Due to the complexity of dentistry and nursing clinical activities, the individuals' health is constantly exposed to several risks factors, mainly biological. There must be more knowledge, practice and obedience to rules and routines related to bio-safety as a primary and fundamental way of prevention.
